2014 Copper Plate Photogravure Workshops With Paul Taylor
2014 August 7, 8, 9, 10, & 11 & October 9, 10, 11, 12, 13
“Of all photoengraving methods of reproduction there is none which produces such rich and satisfying results as photogravure. The reason for this is to be found in the method of printing. It is an intaglio process and, therefore, the quantity of ink which is transferred to the paper can be considerable, and it shares with mezzotint among hand engraving processes the resulting richness of tones.”
A.J. Bull 1930
The abundance of variables inherent in copper plate photogravure plate making and printing is limited only by the artist’s imagination.
This summer, Renaissance Press will be offering two intensive copper plate photogravure workshops, introducing students to the evolution of copper plate photogravure technique and imagery, from the processes inception to present day practices. We will use piezography inks for film output at the workshops (please see the digital film section of this website for more information). Artists that wish to use Mylar for direct copper plate photogravure plate making and printing are also welcome. The skills learned from the digital film discussions and tutorials will enable workshop attendees to return to their studios and make beautiful digital film for any contact print based photographic process.
The workshops will take place at Renaissance Press in Ashuelot, New Hampshire. Participants should expect intensive days in a relaxed environment. Renaissance Press is located on the bank of the Ashuelot River and is a 25 minutes drive to Keene New Hampshire or Brattleboro Vermont.
Paul Taylor, Master Copper Plate Photogravure Plate Maker / Printer and Director of Reniassance Press, will lead the workshop. Paul began his work with copper plate photogravure in the late seventies and has been refining the process for over thirty years. Respected as one of the most highly regarded of contemporary gravure practitioners Paul is both extremely thorough and relaxed in his teaching style. Renaissance Press Prints are collected by museums internationally.
